Grilled caramel notes set against sappy black fruit show classic Haut-Bailly balance, with savoury cassis and bilberry shot through with liquorice root and finely-spun tannins that tiptoe across the palate. Less monolithic than the 2016 or 2018, clear that this is going to be ready to drink sooner. Harvest September 13 to 29. 4% Cabernet France completes the blend. The last vintage under Bob Wilmers.

I continue to believe that the top 2017s from Bordeaux are undervalued in the market: case in point, the 2017 Château Haut-Bailly. This is a gorgeous wine that I think is as good, if not better than the 2000. Stylistically, it's closer in style to the 2014 with its purity, balance, and elegance, yet it brings plenty of fruit and depth. Classic red and black fruit, smoked tobacco, scorched earth, and cedar pencil notes define the aromatics, and it's balanced and has a layered, seamless mouthfeel as well as a great finish.

The 2017 Haut-Bailly is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it has a wonderfully spicy nose of cinnamon stick, cloves, anise and fenugreek with core of roses, warm blueberries, black forest cake and black raspberries plus hints of underbrush and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied with firm, ripe, grainy tannins, it has oodles of freshness and great finesse, continuing bright and energetic on the long, minerally finish.

The 2017 Haut-Bailly is open and focused on the nose with blackberry and briary, crushed stone and light blueberry scents, still primal but very delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, sappy red berry fruit and orange rind. Light spicy notes emerge towards the extended finish. More early drinking than 2016, but not to be underrated. Tasted at the Haut-Bailly vertical at the château.

A bold tarry note coils around the core of plum, black currant and blackberry fruit, while licorice root and bramble details check in on the finish. Packed and grippy, this is a touch rustic in profile at this early stage but should unwind easily enough with time, as all the pieces are in place. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2038.

The 2017 at Haut-Bailly is one of the quiet stars of the vintage. In a year when April frosts challenged the Left Bank, Haut-Bailly's unique hilltop terroir offered protection, and the team delivered a wine that has drawn 95 points from Decanter, Jeb Dunnuck, James Suckling, and Wine Enthusiast, with Wine Advocate at 94 to 96, Vinous at 94, and Wine Spectator at 93. The vineyard's 60% Cabernet Sauvignon foundation shows clearly in the structured, focused character of the wine, with dark cherry, tobacco, and earthy depth building through a long, elegant finish. Haut-Bailly in a great vintage is one of the genuinely exciting addresses in all of Bordeaux, and the price here reflects how well we sourced it.

About The Producer

Vines have been cultivated at what we know today as Château Haut-Bailly since at least 1461, making it one of the older continuously farmed estates in the Graves. The estate takes its name from the 1630s, when it came into the hands of Parisian banker Firmin Le Bailly, who planted it on one of the finest gravel hilltops in the appellation. By the late 19th century the wine was commanding prices that rivaled the First Growths, before a long period of decline set in. The modern chapter begins with Belgian wine merchant Daniel Sanders, who purchased the estate in 1955, replanted large portions of the neglected vineyard, and refocused the winemaking entirely on quality, creating the foundation for everything that followed. Daniel's granddaughter Véronique Sanders now runs the estate, working alongside winemaker Gabriel Vialard, under the ownership of the American Wilmers family, who acquired the property in 1998. What makes Haut-Bailly particularly singular among its Pessac-Léognan peers is the vineyard itself: roughly 15% of the 28 hectares contains vines over 120 years of age, among the oldest in all of Bordeaux, and the estate produces exclusively red wine, with no white in the portfolio. The results under Sanders and Vialard have been extraordinary, and Haut-Bailly now sits comfortably among the Left Bank's most compelling estates, classified or otherwise.
