Bursting with Pomerol goodness, this was bought by my father during last year’s Christmas celebrations (he misread the price on the label if I am really levelling with you, but he was thrilled with his mistake!). Plum pudding, incense, cocoa bean, cappuccino, creamy raspberry fruits, just tannic enough to be serious without being overly constrictive, thoroughly enjoyable. Ready to drink but will age.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Gazin features a beautifully perfumed nose of violets, Ceylon tea, cigar box, sandalwood and fallen leaves over a core of plum preserves, kirsch and blackberry preserves plus a waft of aniseed. Medium-bodied and elegant, with compelling restraint, it has a seductively plush texture, finishing with bags of poise, perfume and persistence.

The 2016 Gazin has a ripe bouquet featuring copious red berry fruit, orange peel, hints of dark chocolate and a dab of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and very lithe in the mouth, and silky-smooth, although it does not boast the greatest depth. This is a very well made wine that should not require extended cellaring but will give years of pleasure. It may be entering a dumb phase, though. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2016 Gazin is deep garnet in color. Baked plums, black cherry preserves, and mulberries waft from the glass, followed by suggestions of scorched earth and dried Provence herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a lively line of freshness to the tightly knit black fruits, supported by ripe, rounded tannins, and finishing on a fragrant earthy note.

The 2016 Château Gazin is outstanding, but it’s firm, straight, and closed, and would certainly be better with more flesh and opulence. Vivid ruby/purple-colored, with notes of cassis and black raspberries as well as spring flowers, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, firm tannins, terrific purity, and a clean finish. The blend is 87% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Cabernet Franc. It’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for 15+.

Château Gazin has been in the Bailliencourt dit Courcol family since 1917, with Nicolas now the fifth generation at the helm. The 26-hectare estate is the largest in Pomerol, sitting directly on the plateau alongside Pétrus and L'Évangile, planted to 90% Merlot. The 2016 is a wine of refined complexity: James Lawther 95, Wine Advocate 95, James Suckling 95, and Antonio Galloni describing a super-refined Pomerol of total finesse, showing silky tannins, blood orange, rose petal, and mint, all finely knit in a gracious and subtle wine. Offered here in magnum, a format that ages magnificently in the cellar and serves beautifully at the table. The price here is incredibly well-positioned for a magnum of this quality. Don't let it pass.

About The Producer

Pétrus's neighbor on the Pomerol plateau, Gazin is one of the Right Bank's most historically grounded estates — a property that served as a medieval hospital for pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela under the Knights of Saint John, whose insignia still marks the estate's label. The modern vineyard dates to 1772, but Gazin's enduring story really begins with Louis Soualle, who purchased it in 1918 and whose descendants, the de Bailliencourt dit Courcol family, have run it ever since. At 26 hectares planted in a single block on the plateau's upper terrace — large by Pomerol's intimate standards — the estate produces around 8,000 cases of 90% Merlot-dominant wine per year, with the same blue clay beneath its vines that lies under Pétrus just next door. Winemaking is meticulous and classically Pomerol: cement vats, careful extraction, 18 months in barrel. The wines consistently reward patience, with the finest vintages opening up magnificently at 10 to 20 years.
