With its rich history, dedication to excellence, and proximity to some of Bordeaux's most celebrated estates, Château Franc-Maillet offers wines that are both accessible and reflective of Pomerol's esteemed winemaking heritage. Established in 1919 by Jean-Baptiste Arpin, Château Franc-Maillet is currently managed by his descendants, Gérard and Gaël Arpin, who oversee the estate vineyards near revered neighbors like Pétrus and L’Évangile.
Land in Pomerol is rarer than hen’s teeth – Bordeaux’s smallest appellation, covering an area of only 5 square miles – this vineyard is a scant 14 acres. The estate employs meticulous viticultural practices, including handpicking and cold maceration, followed by fermentation in small thermo-regulated tanks. The wines are aged in a combination of tanks and barrels, ensuring a refined expression of Pomerol's unique terroir. Mostly Merlot, with 20% Cabernet Franc, this is a classically endowed, modern Pomerol at an unbelievable price!
Truly, this is a veritable diamond in the rough that easily outshines wines three times the price. As plush and luscious as Pomerol gets, the aromas alone will bowl you over! Go on and dab a few drops behind your ears before your next night out – this is some classy, perfumed nectar sure to send those endorphins skyrocketing! Not for the shy – loaded with blackberry pie, anise seed, plum jam, spicy clove, and velvety chocolate mocha – a glass of this wraps you up like a warm hug. The harmonious profile, well-rounded structure, and silken texture simply make me go weak in the knees. Fair warning: there’s not much to go ‘round, so grab some before it’s gone!
FOOD PAIRINGS: Balsamic-marinated flank steak with garlic and rosemary is my pick – with roasted red potatoes and creamy horseradish sauce! My mouth is officially watering.
