The wine of the vintage. Compelling in every sense of the word, the wine is incredibly dark in color. The aromatics kick off with an amazing display of spices, herbs, wet earth, leaf, pepper, grilled meat, black raspberry, kirsch and plum notes. The weight, density and intensity on the palate coats your taste receptors, yet retains its lush, silky texture. The seamless finish leaves the 60 second mark in its wake. This should age for decades.

Red-fruited and garrigue-laden, the nose of the 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is glorious, showing remarkable complexity in its notes of cherries, raspberries and strawberries, all accented by hints of bay leaf, lavender and thyme, plus deeper bass notes of black olives, roasted meat, espresso, star anise and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and intense, it seems to have added structure since last year, with a firm matrix of tannins holding it all together and lingering on the lengthy finish. Put this Mourvèdre-based blend (approximately 60%) away for five or more years; it should drink well for a couple of decades beyond that.

Inky ruby. Deep-pitched red and dark berry liqueur, candied violet, licorice and Moroccan spice scents show superb detail and a smoky mineral overtone. Densely packed and focused on the palate, offering powerful blueberry. bitter cherry and black raspberry flavors, along with chewing tobacco, floral pastille and fruitcake notes. Hangs on with serious persistence, steadily building tannins and reverberating florality. Two-thousand eighteen was a superb vintage for Mourvèdre, and it shows here, with that variety making up about a third of the blend.

It was clear right out of the gate that 2018 would be an excellent vintage of Hommage à Jacques Perrin, and two years on you can see how it is shaping up to be both powerful and self-contained. The fruit character is savoury and mouthwatering, with light flicks of spiced cedar, garrigue, sour cherry and grilled raspberry. This is so good, maintaining grip right through the palate and stretching out the flavour with a saline kissed finish. Organic.

Beaucastel has been making wine on the same ground since before Shakespeare was born. The estate was established in 1549, when Pierre de Beaucastel acquired a barn and vineyard land in the Coudoulet section of what is now Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Perrin family has guided it since 1909, and three generations later, they remain inseparable from its reputation as one of the most respected estates in the region. The family farmed organically beginning in 1950 and started experimenting with biodynamics as early as 1974, decades ahead of the movement. Uniquely, the estate plants all 13 grape varieties permitted in the appellation, with old vines rooted in a mix of sandstone, rocks, and limestone.

The Hommage was created in tribute to the late Jacques Perrin and is made only in the very greatest vintages, crafted around exceptionally old Mourvèdre vines from the Courrieux plot, some planted in 1909. The Wine Advocate rated the 2018 a stellar 99 points, calling it a Mourvèdre-driven blend built to age for decades, while Vinous awarded 97 points for its dense, focused core of dark fruit, tobacco, and floral persistence. About The Producer

The first evidence of Château de Beaucastel as it exists today is in the sixteenth century. In 1909, Pierre Traminer bought the estate and then transferred it to his son-in-law Pierre Perrin, a scientist who further developed Beaucastel. His son, Jacques, continued his father's efforts until 1978 and today, the torch is carried by Jacques' sons, Jean-Pierre and Francois. They are joined by the fifth generation of Perrins - Marc, Pierre, Thomas, Cecile, Charles, Matthieu, and Cesar. The vineyards of Château de Beaucastel are located on historic land where each of the 13 approved grapes varietals of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation are planted. The art of blending these 13 grapes has been passed down from one generation to the next. Beaucastel is, first of all, a family story, the story of Famille Perrin. Their main strength is being able to blend the talents of each family member to run the wine estate under common values: absolute respect for land and terroir; biodynamic culture as a philosophy of life; and the research of truth, balance, and elegance.
