This is truly a collector’s wine – highly sought-after and regularly commanding auction prices that rival some of the most expensive wines in the world. The 2005 was the second vintage made by cellar master Sandrine Garbay, and it’s a beauty: 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc, with 141 grams per liter of residual sugar delivering that characteristic voluptuousness and bright opulence. It was a famously dry growing season, with harvest running from September 19th through October 28th.
Château d’Yquem dates back to the middle ages, and Richard I of England once owned the estate in the late 12th century. He praised the quality of its wines, which were already famous, before the estate changed hands several times until the Lur-Saluces family purchased it in the 18th century. They ran the Château for more than 200 years, further enhancing its reputation for some of the finest sweet wines in the world. Since 1999, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has been at the helm. The soils are famous for their unique blue clay (also known as “mystique clay”), which helps regulate moisture in the vineyard to pristinely develop botrytis’ noble rot – the fungus behind the famous flavor profile of d’Yquem’s luxury sweet wines.
All at once, it is lavish, yet terrifically balanced and humming with a beautiful net of acidity, and just packed with intense flavors of dried apricot, white peach, grilled pineapple, blood orange, beeswax, saffron, toasted almond, acacia honey, and crème caramel. A long, lustrous finish brings it home with a poised purity, and it’s gorgeous to open now or tuck away for years more. Truly, every wine connoisseur should experience this at least once in their lives.
With limitless ageability, unceasing pedigree, and loads of critical applause (including 100 POINTS from Owen Bargreen, and nearly a dozen more scores ranging 95-98+ points) – there’s simply no reason to pass! We only have a small allocation to share, so don’t let this leave you behind!
