Derived exclusively from the château's holdings on the deep gravel soils of the plateau of Brane, the 2019 Brane-Cantenac has turned out brilliantly and merits a special effort to seek out. Wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, pencil shavings, violets, sweet loamy soil and cardamon, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a beautifully seamless, perfumed profile. Retaining all the estate's signature elegance but with an extra dimension of depth and intensity, it's the finest Brane-Cantenac of the modern era and one of the great successes of the 2019 vintage.

Brane Cantenac is on fire lately! Vintage after vintage, they have really been on top of their game and 2019 continues their hot-streak! I do not know what is better, the silky, supple, sensuous, and sexy textures on the palate, or the complex set of aromas with all of its roses, lilacs, violets, cherries, plums, tobacco-leaf, earth and herbs. The wine has texture, length and purity along with the ability to age and evolve for up to 3 decades. This is a beautiful wine from Brane Cantenac. Drink from 2027-2060. 97 Points

Red and black fruits, spicy wood, graphite, leafy tobacco, and underbrush all emerge from the 2019 Château Brane-Cantenac, a beautiful, charming, and complete effort from this estate. Based on 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Carménère and Petit Verdot, it was brought up 18 months in 100% new French oak and hit 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.72. Medium to full-bodied, it has a rounded, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It has the charming, supple, finesse-driven style this château is known for and is impossible to resist. I'd gladly drink a bottle today, yet it won't hit maturity for another 7-8 years and will have a 30-year prime drinking plateau. Drink 2033-2056. The 2019 was harvested from September 18 to October 9, hitting 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.72.

High spice notes, cumin, sandalwood, cedar, white pepper. confident, slow unroll, cassis and blackberry, brambled hedgerow, espresso and cocoa bean. Field-grafting increased Cabernet Sauvignon to over 70% on the plateau at this point, with the 1st wine entirely sourced from the 30ha of Terrace 4. One of Margaux's standouts, 2019 Brane was released at a price 20% down on the 2018. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot, the balance is made up with Cabernet Franc and a splash of Perit Verdot and Carmenere, perhaps contributing to the slight leaness on the palate. Dark currant fruit combines with leafy, cool, characters and spicy aftertaste. A very elegant Margaux which is certainly not a blockbuster, but has precision and finesse. A classy wine which will age very well, gaining extra smoothness over time.

Dense and compact, with rich blackberries, cassis, paprika, black olives, licorice, graphite and a touch of cocoa powder on the nose. A rich, concentrated Brane-Cantenac, with lovely fine-grained tannins and an ample, lengthy finish. Dark ruby, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate aromas of blackberry and liquorice, fresh orange zest, a hint of tobacco, nuances of vanilla in the background. Juicy, lively, appears light-footed, ripe red fruit nuances, fine, silky tannins, freshly structured, delicate nougat, a somewhat leaner food wine at the moment with a sweet finish and good certain ageing potential.

About The Producer

Long considered an underperformer relative to its Second Growth pedigree, Brane-Cantenac has quietly engineered one of the more compelling quality revivals in Margaux. The estate's origins stretch back to the early 18th century, but it was Baron Hector de Brane — the self-styled "Napoleon of the Vines" — who gave it its name and its reputation in the 19th century, reportedly selling off what would become Château Mouton Rothschild to finance his ambitions here. The Lurton family has owned the estate since the 1920s, and since Henri Lurton took over in 1992, he has poured energy into understanding and mapping the plateau de Brane's distinctive gravel terroir. The recent vintages, particularly 2015, 2018, and 2020, show a weight and aromatic precision that have finally caught up with the address — elegant, floral Margaux with real depth, worth seeking out at a price well below its classified peers.
