About The Producer

One of the great values in Pauillac, Batailley earns its 1855 Fifth Growth classification the old-fashioned way — quietly, vintage after vintage, without fanfare. The estate takes its name from a battle fought on its grounds during the Hundred Years' War, and its roots go back to the 15th century, though it really came into its own after Daniel Guestier of Barton & Guestier restored and expanded the vineyards following his 1816 acquisition. The Borie brothers purchased it in 1932, and in 1942 split the estate in two — the larger share, including the château itself, went to Marcel Borie, and that Batailley has remained in the Castéja family's hands since 1961. Today Frédéric Castéja oversees 60 hectares of deep Pauillac gravel, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon and vinified with a plot-by-plot precision made possible by a major cellar renovation in 2006. Classic, structured, and built to age, Batailley remains one of the appellation's most reliable bottles.
