Dark with important sensory traits reminiscent of black plums, blackberries, sour cherries, juniper berries, sandalwood, karkadè, incense, bergamot and guaranà. It is described with a rich and biting approach, with a profile to be explored and discovered over time in the glass. Medium-full body, savory and slender in the sip, it ends juicy, persuasive and with the character of a top player. How beautiful. Better from 2028.

This bottle is distinguished by its black label, and the wine has not been made since 2016. It's great to see it back (albeit in a small production of 2,666 bottles). The Castello Romitorio 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Filo di Seta delivers savory barbecue spice, tarry smoke and black fruit over full-bodied, big-boned texture. However, within that brooding darkness is a complex and modern wine that remains fluid in the glass as it shifts between various fruit and oak-driven aromas. It reveals softly polished edges over a firm backbone with chalky tannins.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Filo di Seta tempts the imagination with a burst of mentholated herbs that give way to sweet violet florals, crushed blackberries and mint. This is deeply textural, nearly creamy in feel, with a core of vibrant acidity to balance as a wave of ripe red and traces of blue fruit flood the palate. Its minerality comes through the finish, mingling with edgy tannins, tart cranberry and orange, yet the mouth is left watering for more. This truly seductive rendition of Filo di Seta will surely win many hearts. While more accessible out of the gate, in the context of how austere it can often be, the balance here guarantees a long and beautiful evolution over time.

The 100% Sangiovese comes entirely from the estate’s celebrated Filo de Seta vineyard, and then a rigorous barrel selection of their top lots takes place before fermenting in cement and aging a minimum of 24 months in oak, followed by bottling and aging another 6 months prior to release.

About The Producer

Castello Romitorio is a new kid on the block by Tuscan standards, going back in its current iteration to just 1984. They have become revered for pushing the boundaries of what Brunello di Montalcino can be in the modern day, and for their perfect marriage of art and agriculture. Their remote parcel in the northwest of Montalcino is surrounded by forests, which provide a cooling influence and surreal elegance to these wines.
