Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di San Niccolo Toscana 2020
46% OFF RETAIL!
We are... well, blown away. Castellare I Sodi di San Niccolo is one of the greatest “Super Tuscan” wines on Earth, and we scored a small parcel of the 2020 vintage some months back at outrageous pricing, and it just landed here in Napa. You won’t see a better deal on this magnificent, 97 point beauty anywhere in the country!
Paolo Panerai aimed to combine tradition and innovation to craft exceptional wines with the establishment of Castellare di Catellina in the 1970s. He merged four existing estates – Castellare, Caselle, San Niccolo, and Le Case – to form the renowned Tuscan winery that has become widely respected for its sustainable viticulture practices and commitment to using only indigenous Tuscan grape varieties. They also embrace forward-thinking processes, like the first scientific selection of Sangiovese clones in the Chianti region in collaboration with the University of Milan and Florence.
This I Sodi di San Niccolo is their flagship wine that has gained international recognition for its power, complexity, and finesse. It’s a blend of 85% Sangioveto (a native Sangiovese clone) and 15% Malcasia Nera, and its name originates from the local Tuscan dialect. To Tuscan farmers, there are fields, which are easy to farm, and then there are “sodi” – which are hard, unforgiving, and yet develop some of the most beautiful wines. The most astute collectors and critics place I Sodi among the top Italian reds, and the 2020 vintage was even placed on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 wines list in 2024!
Full of juicy, ripe blackberries, cherries, and blueberries, this is immeasurably rich and powerful, yet perfectly balanced – with accents of orange peel, sweet tobacco, some dried sage and lavender, red roses, and damp earth. Its depth is expansive and length, everlasting... and as Vinous so aptly described it, “Magical” and “Remarkable in every way.” We couldn’t agree more, and we’re thrilled to have this for by and away the best price in the country! Make sure you get a few, as it is certain to age impeccably for up to two decades!
PAIRING IDEAS: Go with a classic, creamy Tuscan chicken for something rich and flavorful to stand up to this hearty and historic red! I’m eyeing this delicious-looking recipe.
