Giovanni Neri purchased the 200 hectares of Podere Casanova east of Montalcino in 1971, drawn by the estate's galestro soils (a friable clay and shale that Sangiovese loves) and its altitude between 420 and 490 meters. His son Giacomo took over in 1991 and began a transformation of the estate that culminated in a remarkable run of top scores and a Wine Spectator Wine of the Year for the 2001 Tenuta Nuova. Tenuta Nuova is the estate's boldest project: a pioneering vineyard planted in the Le Cetine area of Montalcino's southern reaches, where Giacomo used scientific investigation to identify the optimal clones, rootstocks, and densities for powerful yet polished Brunello.
The 2015 Tenuta Nuova drew extraordinary critical attention. James Suckling awarded 99, Wine Advocate 98+, Farr Vintners 98, Rupert Valentini 98, and Decanter 97, with Vinous and Wine Spectator also at the top of their respective scales. James Suckling described a beautiful, complex bouquet of dried herbs, white truffles, asphalt, cherry stones, peppercorns, spice, and tea leaves, with firm, bright, layered tannins and a salty character leading to an almost endless finish. The pricing here is exceptional for a wine drawing this level of universal critical praise. Don't wait another minute! Less than a case remains.
