The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna La Casaccia is impossible to ignore; it is earthy and mineral, almost smoky and animal in nature. Ashen stones, violets and balsam herbs complicate depths of dried black cherries, sage and clove. This is deeply textural and seductive, balancing ripe red and black fruits with sweet spice and minty herbal tones that create a kaleidoscope of sensation on the palate. A salty flourish shines through the finale, along with a crunchy tinge of blackberry seeds to contrast, as fine-grained tannins wrap the senses with youthful poise and a bitter twang resonates. The 2019 may be immortal. La Casaccia is a showstopper.

Whereas Montosoli is more mineral-driven and finely stitched together, this wine is broad, big and driven by balsamic tones, vapor rub and dried rosemary. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia, however, is more explosive with spice, toasted coffee, black licorice, cherry cola and rich cherry. The tannins feel chalky, although they are fine-grained, but they play a bigger role against the concentrated fruit. Only 7,200 bottles and larger formats were made.

Francesco Ripaccioli runs Canalicchio di Sopra with the same quiet obsession his family has brought to Montalcino for generations, farming two exceptional vineyard sites: Vigna Vecchia Mercatale with its clayey, mineral-rich soils, and Vigna Montosoli Filari Lunghi on marl with high mineral content. The La Casaccia is sourced from the estate's Vigna Casaccia, planted with 30-year-old vines of the famous BBS11 Sangiovese clone, produced only from the 2015 vintage onward, and made in very small quantities of approximately 7,200 bottles. The 2019 is impossible to ignore: earthy and mineral, almost smoky, with black cherry, licorice, black pepper, spice, and toasted coffee on the nose leading to a tightly wound, chalky, fine-grained palate of concentrated dark fruit, intense drive, and a long, saline mineral finish. About The Producer

Canalicchio di Sopra is a family estate in the northeastern sector of Montalcino, a zone prized for producing Brunello of particular elegance, aromatic complexity, and longevity. The Ripaccioli family has farmed these volcanic and galestro soils for generations, and the domaine has been producing Brunello under its own label since the 1960s. Today the estate is managed by brothers Marco and Francesco Ripaccioli alongside their cousin Simonetta, who continue to farm roughly twelve hectares of Sangiovese Grosso with a focus on traditional long macerations and extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks. The estate produces both a classic Brunello di Montalcino and the single-vineyard Casaccia cuvee, drawn from the most prized parcel in the estate's holdings. Both wines reflect the family's commitment to a classical style that prioritizes structure and complexity over early approachability, producing wines built to develop in bottle over decades. The 2013 vintage is considered one of the finest cool-climate harvests in recent Montalcino history, delivering wines of refined elegance. The 2019 is the powerhouse companion: concentrated, structured, and built for the long haul.
