Clos de la Mousse is one of those monopoles, and its history is as layered as the wine itself. The oldest record of the site dates to 1220, when Canon Edme de Saudon bequeathed it to the Chapter of Notre-Dame de Beaune. It was fragmented during the French Revolution, and the Bouchard family spent the better part of the 19th century systematically reassembling it parcel by parcel, completing the monopole on April 13, 1872, with the acquisition of the final plot measuring half an acre and one square meter. The 3.36-hectare site sits at the foot of Beaune Avaux on a gentle slope, with a dense, water-retentive clay and marl subsoil over limestone bedrock that keeps the vines from suffering drought and lends the wine its characteristic concentration and freshness. The surrounding stone wall still stands today, along with the small house at the heart of the vineyard.

The 2020 earned 94 points from both Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, with James Suckling at 92, Wine Advocate 92, Jasper Morris 92, and Burghound 92. Wine Spectator called it vibrant and supple, with violet, black cherry, and licorice flavors accented by sweet spices, developing gracefully through a cascade of fruit and spice on the finish, with a drinking window stretching through 2042. It is, in short, exactly what a great Beaune monopole should be: fleshy and refined, sappy and mineral, and built to reward patience. The price here is exceptional for a wine of this pedigree and provenance. Grab it while you can.

About The Producer

There are few wine houses in the world that can claim nearly three centuries of unbroken history in a single appellation, and Bouchard Père & Fils is one of them. Michel Bouchard founded the maison in Beaune in 1731, originally as a cloth merchant who had fallen in love with Burgundy on his trading routes to Flanders, and his son Joseph solidified the transformation into wine by acquiring the family's first vineyard parcels in Volnay in 1775. In 1820 the family acquired the historic Château de Beaune, a 15th-century royal fortress whose underground galleries became some of Burgundy's most remarkable ageing cellars, housing to this day nearly 2,000 bottles from the 19th century, the oldest a Meursault Charmes from 1846. After more than two centuries in the Bouchard family's hands, the maison was acquired by Joseph Henriot in 1995, triggering a sweeping quality renaissance that included new vineyard acquisitions, a gravity-flow winery built in 2005, and a dramatically tightened approach to viticulture and vinification. In 2022, Bouchard became part of the Artémis Domaines portfolio, the fine wine arm of the Pinault family, with Emmanuel Dumont as managing director and Mickaël Baroin as technical director. Today the estate is the largest owner of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the entire Côte d'Or, controlling 130 hectares across more than 450 individual parcels spanning 48 kilometers from north to south, including celebrated monopoles such as Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus and parcels in Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Chambertin. The organic certification achieved in 2025 across the entire estate marks the latest chapter in what remains one of Burgundy's most consequential ongoing stories.
