You may have heard of Aaron Pott – you know, the top Napa winemaker who spent time sharpening his craft at iconic spots like Châteaux Troplong-Mondot and La Tour Figeac. The 2017 Paramour is inky, saturated, and fully loaded in sheer Napa decadence – made of 56% Cabernet Franc, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Merlot. The layers are seemingly endless, akin to a supreme Right Bank Bordeaux – myriad red, juicy fruits of cherries, berries, and plums, plus a bit of mint, graphite, tobacco, and baking spice, with little whiffs of roasted wild herbs and a lift of violets and lilacs. Whew, all of this hailing from some of Napa’s top vineyard plots such as Stagecoach, Spring Mountain’s Ballard Vineyard, and St. Helena’s immaculate Crocker & Starr vineyard? What a line-up!

Then we have the 2017 Contrarian… a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Merlot for a bold, beastly, wickedly polished Cab-forward blend that flat-out rocks! The aromas are stupefying – Kirsch, Framboise, violets, and mineral-tinged camphor – and the fruit is tremendous. Blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and plums, with caressing notes of star anise, dried sage, cocoa powder, and feathery pencil shavings. Just gorgeously layered and surreal in its complexity.
