It was Ferruccio Biondi Santi who invented Brunello di Montalcino in the late 19th century, isolating the grape variety he called Brunello from Sangiovese Grosso vines on his Tenuta Greppo estate in the hills above Montalcino and producing what is considered the first modern Brunello in 1888. Generations of the family followed, each adding to the estate's remarkable legacy, and the wine's extraordinary longevity is part of what defines it as one of Italy's foundational addresses. The 2010 vintage at Biondi-Santi is, by any measure, an exceptional wine, delivering the classic austere beauty of this estate in a vintage that has proven to deserve its stellar reputation across Montalcino. A wine of linear precision and fine-grained tannins, it opens with rose, violet, and a whisper of pressed powder, moving to bright cherry, crushed red berry, white pepper, and a hint of tobacco on the long, elegant finish. Vinous awarded 96, Wine Enthusiast 96, Wine Advocate 95+, James Suckling 95, and Wine Spectator 93. A wine for the patient collector, now approaching its most rewarding drinking window. The price here is incredible for a Biondi-Santi of this vintage. Grab yours before it's gone.
