98 points! LVMH – the Louis Vuitton, Moët, Dom Pérignon people – went looking for a place to grow world-class Cabernet and ended up in the foothills of the Himalayas in Yunnan, China. Their vineyards sit between roughly 6,900 and 8,500 feet on both banks of the Mekong River, which is absurdly high for a vineyard, and the fruit comes from tiny plots scattered across four remote villages. 2019 was their smallest crop ever – around 800 grams of grapes per Cabernet plant, about a third the yield of a Medoc grand cru. They do genuinely wild stuff here, like rinsing the grapes twice while they're still hanging on the vine before harvest. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called it the best vintage of Ao Yun to date and the highest-scoring Chinese wine he'd ever reviewed (96 points), and James Suckling gave it 98 points.
As for what's actually in the glass… It's a Cabernet-based blend – 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 10% Syrah, and 6% Petit Verdot, aged in a mix of 35% new oak, 35% once-used barrels, and 30% stone jars. Expect big, dark cassis, black cherry, and blackberry with leafy herbal edges – sage, mint, a little green bell pepper – plus vanilla, clove, and smoke from the nicely integrated oak. It's full-bodied but not heavy, with bright acidity and polished, fine-grained tannins, and a finish that runs close to two minutes. It drinks well now but is built to develop for another 15 years or so – so buy two… one for tonight, one for future-you. At $275 vs. $390, you're getting a nearly perfect-scored, absurdly overachieving Himalayan Cab blend for a ridiculous price. Even the biggest wine connoisseurs likely can’t say the same!
