When a wine family has been making the same wine in the same place for 500 years, with 19 consecutive generations to keep the standards steady, you can stop worrying about whether the bottle is any good. Alphonse Mellot's La Moussière is the flagship bottling of one of the Loire Valley's most storied domaines, sourced from the estate's oldest Sauvignon Blanc vines on the silex and limestone hillsides surrounding the medieval town of Sancerre. This is the wine that César Mellot brought to the court of Louis XIV in 1698, more or less, and the standard has not slipped.

The 2025 vintage is receiving early praise as an impressive year for Loire whites, and Mellot's La Moussière shows vibrant minerality, grapefruit and white flower on the nose, a flinty, chalky texture that is the signature of the best Sancerre, and a lively, focused finish that carries on beautifully. This is what makes Mellot's style so distinctive from the heavier, richer interpretations of Sancerre that have come into fashion... it tastes like the place rather than winemaker preference.

Fresh, bright, and bone-dry, La Moussière makes oysters, goat cheese, and summer evenings significantly better. Top-tier Sancerre from a historic producer for a price that doesn't even feel real. Free shipping on 2 or more.
