Chris and Kathryn Hermann founded 00 Wines in 2015 with a singular conviction: that Oregon Pinot Noir and Chardonnay belonged in the same conversation as the world's finest. The Richard's Cuvée is named for Chris's late father, Dr. Richard Hermann, a plant geneticist at Oregon State University whose blessing and encouragement made the project possible when he was 91 years old. The fruit comes from an unnamed vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills (a site so well-known the winery couldn't put it on the label) planted in volcanic soils at the cool, elevated end of the appellation. Decanter describes the Richard Hermann Cuvée site as delivering wines of great finesse, elegance, and freshness that balance out the powerful fruit sourced elsewhere in the 00 portfolio. The winemaking is as precise as the sourcing: whole single berries fermented in a 500-liter Tuscan terracotta amphora, then 16 months in 20% new French oak.

Now eight years in bottle, the 2017 is entering a particularly beautiful window. Reviewers noted perfumed, cool aromas of red berries, rose petal, lilac, and sandalwood with fine delineation on the palate, a wine that absolutely needed at least five years of bottle age and should reward ten or more. That time has passed, and then some. This is one of 66 signed, numbered bottles released through the Willamette Valley Wine Auction: a mature, deeply expressive Eola-Amity Pinot Noir from one of Oregon's most quietly serious producers, in a format that doesn't come around again.

About The Producer

The name is a statement of intent. To founders Chris and Kathryn Hermann, the double zero represents pure potential, and from its first vintage in 2015, 00 Wines has been making a compelling case that the Willamette Valley's potential for Chardonnay rivals anything being produced anywhere in the world. Chris came to winemaking through an unusual path: a second-generation Oregonian raised by a distinguished botanist and geneticist at Oregon State, he spent decades as one of the Willamette Valley's leading wine industry lawyers, advising estates, structuring deals, and absorbing the terroir of nearly every significant vineyard in the valley before eventually deciding he needed to make wine from them himself. He co-founded 00 with his wife Kathryn and his 91-year-old father Dr. Richard Hermann, who lived to see the project launched. Winemaker Matt Perry, who came up through Antica Terra and Adelsheim before joining 00, oversees production of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sourced from a carefully chosen string of sustainably farmed Willamette Valley vineyards, with Burgundian winemaker Pierre Millemann serving as consultant and handling the estate's small-lot production from Grand Cru sites in Burgundy and Champagne. The flagship VGW Chardonnay has become one of the most talked-about American white wines of the past decade, praised by Decanter as one of the best Chardonnays produced in America today, and the wines collectively have done more than perhaps any other Oregon producer to reframe the valley's identity from simply "home of Pinot Noir" to something considerably more ambitious.
