Château de Pommard Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2019
97 points! In the realm of 2019 Red Burgundy, every other wine to hit that revered plateau from the good folks at Wine Enthusiast was a Grand Cru...and far, far pricier! (Like, hundreds of dollars per bottle pricier.) This fantastic monopole is quickly being discovered as Burgundy’s best value – with a promotion to top cru status seemingly imminent. Snag yours before the prices skyrocket...97 point Red Burgundy monopoles – for less than $150 – don’t come around every day! Best price in the USA – and it’s not even close!
Located in the beating heart of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, Château de Pommard has stood for over 300 years – making it one of the oldest estates in the region. This manor and surrounding clos is a UNESCO-protected site – with a history and pedigree that few (if any) other village-level estates can hope to match. The Clos Marey-Monge stands as the largest monopole in Burgundy, with 20 hectares – all organic and biodynamically farmed – broken up into seven distinct parcels, each with a distinct geology and terroir that is used to create the Château de Pommard portfolio.
Each of the parcels is farmed and reared according to the needs of the individual terroirs, and indeed, the estate produces seven single-plot wines as stand-alones from this unique site. But for us, the final blend of all of the different parcels is what really stands apart here – the complexity, the generosity, the silky combination of elegance and power that so defines great Burgundy...simply an utterly compelling and worthy wine. 2019 is a low-yielding yet high-quality vintage and the team here did an excellent job of capturing the essence of the vintage. Open and integrated enough for early drinking, this is nevertheless an exceptional candidate for drinking anytime over the next two-plus decades.
The wine opens with dusty, almost baby powder-like floral notes – an elegant potpourri of lilacs, rose petals, peonies, and more – that cascades into a rush of red berries and cherries, the damp earth of coastal rainforest, the sweet perfume of white truffles, and a jagged minerality reminiscent of cold, wet slate. An elegant frame of barrel spice and sweetness grants this polish and a decadent voluptuousness on the finish… this has the weight and bearing of a Grand Cru, with the precision and focus of a top Premier Cru...all at an incredible value. We have this at over $40 less than the next best price in the country...grab yours while it lasts!
PAIRING IDEAS: Red Burgundy like this is a perfect match for Chinese food. I’m serving this alongside a gorgeously decadent 5 Spice Lacquered Pork Belly – perfect over rice with vegetables or as part of a cabbage wrap, or best of all – as the main ingredient in fluffy, saucy baos. Yum!
