43% OFF RETAIL!
The 94 point 2020 Serralunga d’Alba Barolo from Massolino is a masterful regional tapestry of epic proportions! Pulled from three Nebbiolo vineyards across Serralunga d’Alba, it is a gorgeous conglomeration of various characteristics from multiple terroirs, and we’re thrilled to have it for a hair under half-off! Limited to only 10 cases, let er rip!
Giovanni Massolino – the first person to bring electricity to the village of Serralunge d’Alba – founded his family estate in 1896. His son, Giuseppe, following in his father’s tenacious footsteps, built their first wine cellar, as well as extended the estate’s holdings to the area’s best soils and founded the Consortium for the Defence of Barolo and Barbaresco in 1934. Three more generations after continued the family legacy and purchased three additional jewels of cru vineyards to add to the Massolinos’ holdings. The core of the family’s winemaking mentality is honoring the deeply profound connection between the hills, vines, and winegrowers who tend to them, and preserving the characteristics of their native grape varieties. It’s this connection that grows deeper with each year passing and each generation that steps in to continue the estate’s purpose.
“We have always believed in Barolo and its austere uniqueness. We care for it in keeping with the philosophy that inspires our approach to wine – minimal intervention, to capture all the qualities that our soils and grapes can create in the glass.” – the Massolino family
They call this Barolo “the holistic expression of our hills” – pulled from multiple parcels to pay tribute to the entirety of Serralunga d’Alba. Traditional aging in large Slavonian oak for up to 30 months generates a pure and authentic profile with smooth edges and a complex range of aromas. Grown upon mixed soils with a predominance of limestone, this is as classic an expression of Barolo as you can get with loads of life to give for another decade-plus, yet!
A nose of dark cherries, cocoa powder, and dried orange peel seduces from the first swirl, followed by a palate drenched with blackberries, black currants, dried herbs, cedar bark, espresso, clove, a hint of tar, and a bright raspberry note whispering through the long-winded finish. Sultry and smooth tannins and a prominent acidity wrap this up with a sneaky power that effortlessly draws you in for the next sip time and time again. We can’t help but swoon over this – a Barolo with classic, caressing characteristics from a fervently involved and historically significant family in the area. Whatever you do, fans of this style need not miss out on this one. Our supplies are quite limited and won’t be around for long!
