Sitting high in the Mayacamas, above Napa Valley’s charming town of Saint Helena, is Robert Keenan Winery, a small, family estate that has become a humble legend in the Spring Mountain AVA. Their 94-point 2022 Chardonnay is bright, mineral, and harmoniously balanced with fruit and acidity. Take it home for just $25 when you order 3 or more!
Since 1974, the Keenan crew has run their 180-acre estate on the upper foothills of Spring Mountain – in the “just-right” pocket between Spring Mountain Vineyards, Fantesca, and Lokoya. Farmed sustainably, and fully off-the-grid with solar energy, these elegant, age-worthy wines magically transport you back in time. The winery was started by Robert Keenan, and his son, Michael Keenan, has been at the helm since 1998 after growing up absorbing all he could about winemaking. Gradually, Michael replanted several acres of the property and streamlined the winemaking process to be more efficient. Michael’s wife, Jennifer, designed the Keenan label and helps with all aspects of interior and graphic design – while their two adult children, Reilly and Madison, have also been heavily involved from a young age, alongside the rest of their quaint and dedicated team.
Keenan only makes estate-grown wines expressing their unique mountain terroir, pure varietal characteristics, and excellent ageability. With an estate so high in elevation – upwards of 1,700 feet above sea level – the grapes are above the fog line and get lots of warm, ripening sunlight every day, but also a bit of evening chill to help the grapes retain acidity. This “striking and simply gorgeous” (according to Decanter) Chardonnay is made entirely from estate fruit fermented and aged in both French and American oak, with no secondary or malolactic fermentation.
The result is an utterly crisp, citrine-infused wine with plenty of character and complexity that you wouldn’t ordinarily find in a $25 bottle of Chardonnay. It’s like one part Chablis and one part Montrachet, with a striking harmony of butterscotch and flint, plus green grass, lemon oil, green apple butter, and ripe d’Anjou pears mingling with flecks of baking spice, river rock minerality, and a mouthwatering, tingly freshness. It’s just creamy enough, acidic enough, and ripe enough to satisfy all kinds of Chard lovers – and from a family estate that has grown into one of Spring Mountain’s greatest? A thousand times yes! Or, at least, three times yes to get the incredible price drop down to just $25. Your new favorite fall ambrosia awaits!
PAIRING IDEAS: Pair this with a hearty roasted vegetable salad filled with brussels sprouts, carrots, sweet potatoes, and beets over kale with crunchy pumpkin seeds, creamy goat cheese, and a tangy maple vinaigrette dressing. SO good – this recipe is my absolute favorite! (If you want a bit more protein, feel free to toss in some grilled chicken or farro.)
