Giovanni Manzone Barolo Gramolere Riserva 1995
16% OFF RETAIL!
We love, love, LOVE Manzone’s Barolos deeply. Five generations of winemakers have cultivated the same vineyards for over a century in the Monforte d’Alba. We’ve been huge fans and supporters for years, and even though their recent fame and notoriety mean we get less wine than we’d like, we’re ecstatic to have this single vineyard 1995 Riserva available!
Coming from more than 50-year-old vines on the steep slopes of the Gramolere vineyard, this wine stands across from the revered locale of Bussia and maintains much the same soil composition: calcareous stones, sand, and fossils. The Riserva Gramolere is produced only in prestigious vintages – at a microscopic production of only a few thousand bottles. Plantings for this wine are from the top portion of Gramolere, known as Gramolere Soprana, where the extra exposure and long days add intensity and character to the grapes.
Fifth-generation vintner Mauro Manzone now runs the cellar, playing a chief role in taking the estate to ever greater heights. Principles of natural, non-invasive agriculture are followed in the vineyards, with no insecticides or fertilizers used...ever. The grapes undergo native yeast fermentation on the skins lasting 30-40 days with soft pumping over to guarantee a delicate polyphenolic extraction. Minimal amounts of SO2 are added and all the wines are unclarified and unfiltered.
This wine is drinking so nicely right now, showing all the wonderful secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors that make Riserva Barolo so amazing. The aging has been done for you here – just pop the cork and enjoy a wonderful mature Barolo from one of the greats! The maturity is apparent in the beautiful deep, brick red color – along with aromatic, dark, and brooding notes of dried roses, tar, licorice, mushrooms, wet forest floor, and some dried fruit. As the wine opens and evolves, taste and experience ripe black plums, black cherries, raw hazelnuts, and sweet, smoky oak. The finish is dry, long, and salivating with a tingly acidity.
Bad news: we don’t have much. Good news: what little we have, we’re sharing with you at $50+ off retail AND ground shipping included on two or more bottles! Don’t miss out on this rare and collectible beauty!
PAIRING IDEAS: This traditional Ossobuco Milanese with risotto is the ultimate pairing for this Riserva Barolo.
