This single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the Van der Kamp Vineyard on Sonoma Mountain – one of the state’s oldest Pinot Noir sites, with current plantings from 1952 – so perfectly exhibits its own very special microclimate. The high elevation, the north-facing aspect, the patchwork soils of loam with volcanic rock and decomposed river bed, the unique collision of fog banks from the Petaluma Gap and the bay – it all comes together to become an ideal place for Pinot grapes to flourish. Biodiversity and environmental stewardship are a huge component here, and this 2021 microproduction from Sonoma Pinot stalwart, Dutton-Goldfield, is simply a brilliant, luscious expression of the land and all its intricacies. If you love cool-climate Pinot, this is a MUST-try.
This is incredibly smooth and juicy, with just enough subtle earthy and herbal characteristics to balance it out. The aromas are rife with pomegranate tea, red cherries, strawberry jam, and salty sea air, while the palate brings in black cherries and raspberries, a hint of cranberry, wet fall leaves, some red licorice, and the herbal sensations of fennel, fresh thyme, and sage.
We’re big hikers, and I swear Sonoma County is one of the most diverse and stunning hiking areas in the world. From craggy coastal paths, to dense redwood-covered trails, to sweeping grassy hills with foggy vineyards in the distance – you can get a little taste of so many different types of land and views in just one small area. It’s what makes wine from this area so great, too – the many “microclimates,” as the pros call them, of Sonoma County.
