The wines of Gérard Raphet are a real treat for Burgundy lovers. No Raphet ever went to enology school, and winemaking has been passed from father to son, and now daughter, through four generations. There’s no pontificating, no philosophy – just the rhythm of a day that starts before sunrise, spent in the vineyard tending their old vines and the rest in the cellar, gently coaxing the wines to greatness.
Located in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits subregion, Clos de Vougeot (also known as Clos Vougeot) stands as the largest and one of the most renowned grand cru vineyards. Typical of Côte de Nuits vineyards, it is exclusively planted with Pinot Noir. Enclosed entirely by a wall, the vineyard also features a distinguished château that serves as the headquarters of the local winemaking brotherhood.
These grapes grew on vines close to 100 years old, among thin soils and close to the mother rock of Burgundian limestone. Notes of damp soil, black cherries, red raspberries, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, and black truffle coalesce into something truly magical – with lusciously smooth tannins and a profound structure. Raphet does it again, and this remarkable wine is suited to age for at least a couple of decades. We have just two cases, and they will be swept away quickly, so make your move to snag some of this wildly collectible Red Burgundy for your own cellar.
