Domaine Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2020
40% OFF RETAIL!
Under $80 for a wine such as this, from a truly iconic producer...now that is something to get excited about! 94 points and over $55 off – all at the best price in the USA!
Since 1825, The Faiveley clan has made a living tending vines and producing wines in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Today, it is the seventh generation at the helm with Eve and Erwan Faiveley – a sister and brother pair that have returned home to Burgundy to run their family’s iconic domaine. Domaine Faiveley is the largest family-run domaine in Burgundy, with more monopoles than any other producer in the region, and a reputation for quality that covers their entire portfolio.
This particular cuvee stems from the family’s 10 hectares that they own in Gevrey-Chambertain, divvied up over 20 separate parcels of 55+-year-old vines spread throughout the village. Some of these parcels go back to 1945, which on its own makes this price point simply remarkable – and we’ve not even gotten to what’s inside the bottle! They sell off all the barrels of what doesn’t meet their standards to local negociants – ensuring that the quality here far surpasses what one often encounters with village-level Burgundy.
Perfumed and aromatic, simply singing with rose petals, red and black cherries, menthol, hibiscus, pomegranate tea, crushed raspberries, and salty, red plums. The mouthfeel is expansive but focused with earthen notes of red clay and forest floor accenting a vibrant and fruit-forward core of red apples, strawberries, and red cherries. Gevrey’s characteristic notes of smoked meats, roasted herbs, and a sanguine, iron backbone complete the wine – which only expands and lengthens with time in the glass. This is a plush and vivacious expression of Gevrey’s envious terroir, and the assemblage of old vines gives this a depth and complexity that is almost never seen in village-level Gevrey-Chambertin. The 2020 vintage was a wonder for reds in the region, and the joyous, succulent nature here perfectly encapsulates the vintage highlights. We got all that we could, but prime Red Burgundy from an iconic producer, at a price like this?! Who knows how long we’ll have it around!
PAIRING IDEAS: Apart from your Thanksgiving turkey...give this a go with a juicy duck breast. Season well and bring it up to medium heat slowly, starting it fat side down in a cool pan. As the fat renders, and the skin tightens and crisps, add some sage, and a knob of butter and baste away to a medium rare. Rest, slice, and serve with braised red cabbage and glazed carrots.
