A classic wine, the 2002 Syrah Bionic Frog, which wasn’t harvested until October 10 and was raised in 50% new oak, offers beautiful, chalky minerality, marine-like saltiness, olive brine, currants and cassis-driven aromas and flavors. Possessing beautiful purity, with an underlying elegance that shows with more time in the glass, drink it anytime over the coming decade.

Showing a touch of maturity, the 2002 Cayuse Syrah Bionic Frog is packed with deep, dark fruits, truffle, raw meat and spice aromatics. Still showing a trace of oak, this opens up beautifully in the glass and has serious fruit and solid complexity. The wine is full bodied on the palate with superb balance, a full, mouth filling texture and a long finish. While this still has room to grow and is drinking beautifully, it shouldn’t have a problem going another 8 to 10 years.

(14.6% alcohol: picked on October 12 in what Baron described as a pretty cool year in which the tannins took a long time to develop; vinified with 30% whole clusters): Good medium red with an amber edge but good depth in the middle. Aromas of plum, truffle, mocha, balsamic cedar wood, fig and spices. Boasts lovely energy to its concentrated flavors of dark raspberry, black fig, clove and sandalwood. Very fine-grained wine with excellent saline density as well as noteworthy retention of fresh fruit. Finishes with smooth, resolved tannins, terrific length and superb energy and lift.

Cayuse Vineyards was founded in 1997 by French vigneron Christophe Baron, who recognized the untapped potential of the rocky, cobblestone soils in Walla Walla’s “Stone Cairn” region of Oregon and Washington.
