Of all Barolo’s grand crus, Rocche di Castiglione is among the grandest: a long, steep limestone-rich slope just south of the village of Castiglione Falletto, facing perfectly southeast. Roccheviberti is one of the most classical voices from this extraordinary site, balancing tradition with precision to best express the terroir. Long macerations without over-extraction, large French oak casks rather than barriques: the goal is always classical Barolo that speaks first of place. The Vecchie Viti (old vines) label denotes selection from the oldest vines in the estate’s Rocche holdings. Vinous awarded the 2021 92 points, calling it an attractive mid-weight yet deep offering with wild red cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco, spice, and dried flowers giving lovely aromatic presence, a complete and very nicely done Barolo. Garnet-colored and striking on the nose, with dried flowers, red fruit preserves, sweet spice, and menthol on the palate, wrapped in silky tannins. At this price, from this site, this is a genuinely remarkable buy. Very limited.

About The Producer

The Viberti family's story in Castiglione Falletto is one of quiet, generational patience finally rewarded. Grandfather Cesare purchased his first parcel in the famed Rocche di Castiglione vineyard in the 1940s, followed by a parcel of Bricco Boschis in the 1950s, and for decades he sold his coveted fruit to the historic wineries of the region, becoming a revered expert in the terroir of Castiglione Falletto. It wasn't until 2002, when third-generation Claudio Viberti took the reins, that the family began bottling their wines in earnest under their own label. Claudio refined the farming practices from the start, eliminating all chemicals and herbicides while drastically lowering yields across the estate's 4.5 hectares. The name Roccheviberti is itself a statement of intent, fusing the family name with the Rocche di Castiglione grand cru that sits at the heart of their holdings. Castiglione Falletto is celebrated throughout the Barolo zone for its aromatic potency and distinctive elegance, producing wines with finer tannins than neighboring communes while retaining the structure and aging potential the appellation is known for. Claudio's two single-vineyard Barolos (Rocche di Castiglione and Bricco Boschis) show just how different two parcels in the same village can be, and both have earned serious attention from collectors who follow Piedmont closely.
