This single-vineyard, 94-point Cabernet Sauvignon is made by a powerhouse father-son duo and sourced from an Oakville site just next door to the prestigious To Kalon Vineyard’s Monstera Block. We have it for a stunning discount, plus an even juicier deal when you pop three or more in your cart.
Complant is a new father-and-son duo, combining decades of experience with incredible vineyard sites here in Napa. Daniel Baron is a long-time participant in the Bay Area wine industry – with some simply iconic stops along his decades-long career. He was part of the vineyard crew at Chateau Montelena in 1973 – the same year their legendary Chardonnay that won the Judgement of Paris was born. In 1982, he was working in the cellars of the esteemed Chateau Petrus – helping to craft one of the most collectible wines of all time. There, he befriended Christian Moueix, leading to a 12-year stint at Dominus, followed by 23 years as the winemaker for Silver Oak. His son, Sam, has taken a similarly circuitous route – with harvests in Napa, Burgundy, and New Zealand before returning home to California to work with such rising stars as Broc Cellars, Nickel and Nickel, Kivelstadt Cellars, and Ashes and Diamonds Winery.
Now that we’ve firmly established this winery’s pedigree – what about the juice? Simply delicious – and the perfect expression of that signature dusty-berry Oakville style. The wine ages in thin-staved Bordeaux barrels for 18 months and gets racked through the heads every three months, a labor-intensive method that Daniel picked up from his time in Pomerol to preserve high-toned aromatics. A rich ruby color fills the glass as notes of wild bramble berries and sweet tobacco float into the air. More juicy red and black berries coat the tongue, with additional notes of cassis, dark chocolate shavings, dusty black cherries, dried rosemary, and a balanced zip of acidity. Exceptionally smooth tannins and a long, fresh finish bring this home, and it’s clear it’ll go another decade or two in the cellar with ease.
The fruit hails from the iconic UC Davis Oakville South Station Vineyard, one of Napa’s top vineyard sites developed by Hamilton Crabb, founder of To Kalon, in the 1840s, and later given to the university. The vines sit on the Oakville bench, known for some of the best soils for growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and is one of the most meticulously farmed vineyards in the valley. Pair all of that with the highly successful 2023 vintage, for a bottle under $72 (or under $36 with free ship on three-plus), and this deal is simply remarkable. This is a top-of-the-line Napa Cabernet from a producer and plot whose backgrounds speak for themselves for an unbeatable price. The possibilities are limitless – our supply of this fantastic deal... somewhat less so. Don’t miss out!
