Using fruit from a vineyard in Carneros owned by the Lede family, this Chardonnay brings together three clones from three distinct blocks: Old Wente, Hyde, and Mount Eden. The site represents a new development for the Lede family, with former Cliff Lede winemaker Laura playing a key role in re-establishing the collaboration. The wine was aged for 11 months in 50% new French oak, followed by 5 months in stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2024 vintage is incredibly pure, bright, and lifted, showing expressive notes of citrus, tropical fruit, and white peach. Layers of saline and wet-stone minerality add depth and vibrancy, while the long finish is full-flavoured, finely mineral, and driven by captivating energy and tension. Sphaerics was founded in 2022 by Brian Ball and Laura Jones, a husband-and-wife team of wine industry veterans. The wines are made by Laura, who fine-tuned her Chardonnay and Pinot Noir winemaking skills during a 5-year tenure at Aubert and a stint at Domaine Armand Rousseau.

The 2024 Chardonnay Overline, tasted from tank just prior to bottling, shares remarkable similarities with the 2023, but with everything dialed up. It's another wine that balances inner tension with plush, unctuous textures and unreal density. The depth of the minerality and tactile zip of the acids here join together in effortless harmony. We recently spent time with the Sphaerics team, an enthralling new project led by winemaker Laura Jones – and it left a serious impression. Laura and her husband Brian Ball founded the winery in 2022 after she’d spent time honing her craft at noteworthy spots like Aubert and Domaine Armand Rousseau. The Sphaerics wines are made explicitly in a similar style to Aubert and white Burgundy, and our full buying team agreed this is THE best and most exciting Chardonnay we’ve tasted in a minute.

These wines are coming from a very focused, small-production winery that’s entirely dedicated to single-site Chardonnay… and frankly, it’s one of the most infatuating new labels I’ve come across in some time.

The Overline bottling comes from a cool Carneros site that gets its breezy climate and evening fog from the San Pablo Bay, infusing natural freshness and structure into the wine. Stylistically, this wine is all about energy and clarity, with a phenomenal texture, something I personally love in Chardonnay. While there’s both polish and depth, everything still feels dialed in and intentional. Seamlessly balanced.

My notes: On the nose, I get lemon zest, pear, and white peach, with some subtle floral notes and a whisper of minerality. The palate follows with layered orchard fruit, bright acidity, and a light sea mist finish that keeps it incredibly fresh and zippy. If you’re a fan of bright and crisp, yet still layered, elegant, and textural Chardonnays, this is one to scoop up and truly savor.
