At the very heart of Montalcino – close to the famed iconic Biondi Santi’s Il Greppo estate – the San Filippo estate sits on 22 hectares, with an old farmhouse and chapel dating back to 1672. They produced their first Brunello in 1977, and today, under the ownership of Roberto Gianelli, the facility has gained a reputation as one of the top Tuscan estates of all time. Our vertical 3-packs feature the immaculate 2018, 2019, and 2020 vintages of their top Le Lucére Brunello – all with 95-97 point scores, and all delightfully, powerfully breathtaking.

San Filippo remains one of the best estates in all of Tuscany, and has consistently made appearances on top wine lists, as well as won over the hearts of wine critics and fans the world over. The holdings of the estate are broken up amongst four different vineyards: San Felippo, Lo Scorno, Le Coste, and their highest-quality plot, Le Lucére. This vertical 3-pack of pristine bottlings are rare Brunello's made exclusively from Sangiovese on the Le Lucére vineyard. Here, marine deposits of silt and sandstone sit on the crest of a hill at over 1000 feet in elevation, just in the shadow of the Montalcino fortress. Superstar consultant and Tuscan legend Paolo Caciorgna guides the winemaking, with the day-to-day under the watchful eye of Thomas Bianciardi.

Starting strong with the 96 point 2018 vintage – from what was a cool, classic, and elegant year for Brunello di Montalcino – this is seductively floral with red roses, plus some camphor and black tea, alongside a rush of cherries, red currants, and alpine strawberries, and whispers of blood orange, cocoa powder, and roasted herbs. Next up, the impressively potent, 97 point 2019 vintage – chock-full of lavender and eucalyptus, with notes of dark cherry, muddled raspberries, Earl Grey tea, and a medley of Indian spices from what is considered a 5-star, better-than-perfect vintage for the region. Finally, the double 95 point 2020 vintage… first violets, and black cherries, then crushed blackberries, and a punch of mint, with accents of crunchy, gravelly minerals and a whiff of milk chocolate. This vintage culminated in stressed-out vines and low yields, but the grapes that survived are easily some of the tastiest and most gorgeous you’ll try.

This is easily some of the best Brunello around today – and to have verticals of such show-stopping, exquisite vintages, from the top plot of one of the region’s mightiest estates… for nearly $200 off?! It’s almost too much to handle! Alas, we don’t have nearly enough as we’d like, so make your way to the check-out with gusto to make sure you secure yours! Free shipping on just one 3-pack makes this a done deal!

About The Producer

Situated in the splendid area of Eastern Montalcino close to Biondi Santi’s Il Greppo and La Serena, the wines of San Filippo are ageworthy and elegant, though very approachable in their youth. The estate totals 22 hectares, 11 of which are under vine, dedicated mostly to Sangiovese, with a small olive grove as well. Founded in 1972 (1977 was the first year of production), the estate was recently purchased by Roberto Giannelli who restored and renovated the entire facility. With the help of consulting winemaker Paolo Caciorgna, Roberto is producing 2500 cases of top-flight Brunello aged in Slavonian and Allier oak casks each year, as well as 800 cases of a delicious Rosso di Montalcino aged 6 months in used barriques and large casks.
