Gandona Winery is a true gem nestled in Napa Valley's prestigious Pritchard Hill, where the combination of breathtaking views and steep, terraced vineyards creates the perfect environment for crafting world-class wines. Gandona translates loosely from Portuguese to English as “humble man”, a nickname bestowed upon Manuel Pires’s grandfather who was known to be incredibly generous and kind. With a highly successful career as president of a globally renowned security technology company, in 2006, Manuel decided to return to his family’s farming roots with the opening of his winery, named in honor of his grandfather and his exceptional legacy. This is a place where passion meets precision, and the result is simply spectacular.
The 2019 vintage of their Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is an extraordinary wine, with 98 points from Vinous’s Antonio Galloni, who called it “a wine of soaring intensity and structure”, with ample notes of dark, juicy fruits, chalky dark chocolate, new leather, and damp earth. The long and intense finish is buttoned up with tightly woven tannins and a buzzing energy – as its fruit comes from some of the steepest lots on their property. Although it’s drinking fantastically now, it’s one of those Napa Cabs that is truly timeless, and absolutely built to age beautifully over the years.
