Acumen is one of those spots that leaves you wondering just how they do it. With vineyard land way, way up in the no-man’s-land section of Atlas Peak, planted and farmed by iconic vineyard guru, Michael Wolf (Harlan Estate and more), and brought lovingly to bottle the winemaking prowess of living legend, Phillip Corallo-Titus… it is simply baffling to be able to score these artisan Cabernet Sauvignons at such a spectacular price!

Forbes called Acumen “a shining new star,” and the winery produces an excellent range of wines – but we must say, their PEAK Cabernet absolutely tops the list. Chappellet’s long-time winemaker, Phillip Corallo-Titus (and frequent 100-point club recipient), selects the very best blocks and barrel lots from the Attelas and Edcora Vineyards on the Atlas Peak estate to craft this PEAK Napa Cab. With 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, aged in 75% new French oak – it's an absolute doozy! If you love gargantuan, mountainside Cabernet, man, this is it.

It’s just massive, dark, concentrated, and not for the shy, with bakers chocolate, wild blackberry puree, kirsch, plums, and blueberries, with a minerally, crushed rock note and exotic, toasty Asian spices like star anise, plenty of graphite, and this sweet, luscious vanilla bean kiss on the velvety finish. It drinks magnificently today, and is certain to last at least through the next couple of decades! This is more booming than any fireworks display, and the quality for value of such a prestigious wine is off-the-charts! A little Independence Day wine shopping? Twist my arm – I’m loading up, too!

PAIRING IDEAS: Grill up some beef bratwursts, with some grilled onion and bell peppers on the side – and shove it all into a brioche bun with spicy, seedy mustard. A match made in heaven!

About The Producer

Acumen Winery was founded in 2012 by entrepreneur Eric Yuan (not the Zoom founder), inspired by his experiences in Paris and a desire to craft Bordeaux-style wines in Napa. He acquired two high elevation estates on Atlas Peak—the original Attelas Vineyard in 2012 and the larger Edcora Vineyard in 2013—totaling 116 organically certified acres. From the start, Acumen focused on structurally nuanced Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc sourced from volcanic soils and a cool, long growing season that lends balance and elegance to its wines, eschewing the heavily ripened, high alcohol style that began dominating Napa. Early vintages, including those handled by founding winemaker Denis Malbec, earned praise for their refined restraint—but tragically, Malbec passed away in 2016. In 2020, Acumen recruited veteran Phillip Titus (of Chappellet fame) as Director of Winemaking to deepen its mountain cabernet program. Supported by estate leadership including Mark Castaldi (CFO/Estate Director) and Diana Schweiger (Sales & Marketing), the brand has matured into a model of modern mountain winemaking. Today, Acumen produces two tiers: the approachable “Mountainside” lineup from younger vines, and the premium “Peak” collection—bottled separately by site (Attelas and Edcora)—all aged in French oak with aging potential. Scores have reached the mid-to-high 90s (e.g., their 2021 Peak Cabernet Sauvignon). With an emphasis on sustainable, organic farming and a refined, food-friendly style, Acumen has earned a reputation as one of Atlas Peak’s rising stars in the premium mountain wine scene.
