Stéphane Ogier represents the seventh generation of a family rooted in Ampuis, the cradle of Côte-Rôtie, and took over from his father Michel in 1998 after spending time in Beaune studying Burgundy’s approach to individual terroir, an influence that has shaped his entire philosophy. Each year, in exceptional vintages only, Ogier reserves a portion of fruit from each of his nine most treasured lieux-dits before they go into his blended cuvées, vinifying and aging each separately to preserve its individual terroir character, and releasing them together in a single wooden case. The nine lieux-dits in the 2019 selection are Montlis, Fongeant, Côte-Bodin, Bertholon, Le Champon, Cognet, Montmain, La Viallière, and Leyat. This is not a collection of second picks. These are the building blocks of Ogier’s finest wines, pulled aside before assembly, and in 2019, a year that produced some of the finest Côte-Rôtie in decades, the results are extraordinary. Decanter awarded the collection 97 points as a set, Vinous 96 and 95 across individual bottles. Nine separate vineyard personalities, one legendary vintage, one of the most compelling Northern Rhône collector’s pieces we have ever offered. Very limited. If you have ever wanted to taste the soul of Côte-Rôtie, this is it.
