La Landonne is one of three Guigal single-vineyard wines known collectively as the La Las, wines that have drawn more perfect scores from more major critics than perhaps any other collection of bottles from a single producer on earth. The vineyard sits at the extreme northern end of the Côte Brune, planted entirely to Syrah on iron-rich limestone clay soils at between 200 and 330 meters on some of the steepest inclines in the region, and was first farmed by Guigal in 1975 when Marcel had it planted at Philippe’s birth. It is the most backward and structured of the three La Las, demanding the most patience and rewarding it most lavishly. The 2015 is a wine of pure legend. Jeb Dunnuck awarded a perfect 100, describing it as majestic and regal, a powerful, massively concentrated Côte-Rôtie with a saturated purple color and an insane bouquet of smoked meats, graphite, liquid rocks, violets, and crème de cassis. Wine Advocate awarded 100, calling it impenetrably dense and dark, loaded with black olive, espresso and cassis, with incredible richness, detail, and a nearly endless finish. James Suckling also awarded 100, describing a profound wine of really striking depth and resonance, saying it is a triumph and up there with the greatest La Landonne releases. Wine Spectator 99, Vinous 97, Decanter 95. Three perfect scores from three of the world’s most authoritative critics. The price here is incredible for a wine of this magnitude. Very limited. These will not come around again.
