*Sigh*, Guigal is close to our hearts. Like so many, Marcel’s wines may have been your Cote-Rotie epiphany back in the day, or one waiting to happen. They are better than ever. Read the reviews below. PARTICULARLY, the Chateau d’Ampuis is a favorite, because it truly is at the level of the legendary La La's, while being MUCH more approachable to your wallet. SO much bang for the buck.
The Guigal family spent 15 years restoring Chateau d'Ampuis, a historic property whose oldest sections date to the 11th century. The Chateau d’Ampuis has been the symbol of the town of Ampuis and the world-renowned Cote-Rotie vineyard area for ten centuries. Currently made from 7 exceptional vineyards from both sides of Cote-Rotie, the Cote Blonde and the Cote Brune, and every vineyard is adjoining one of the three Guigal single vineyard crus: La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque. Ampuis is composed of 93% syrah and 7% viognier, and aged in the same manner as the Guigal single-vineyard crus, with a 4 week maceration and alcoholic fermentation followed by 38 months in new barrels that are all made at the estate.
PAIRING IDEAS: It’s got to be leg of lamb. We like this recipe, because of the modest coffee component – goes sensationally with the herbs and richness of the lamb and the wine.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: For some reason “Don’t Bring Me Down” by ELO is just what we want right now.
