The Vieilles Vignes is the flagship of Domaine de la Janasse, the cuvée that has placed this family estate at the very top of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s hierarchy since Christophe Sabon took over from his father Aimé in the late 1990s. The wine draws from vines as old as 1920 across four distinct vineyard sites in the northeastern sector of the appellation, the La Janasse and La Crau lieux-dits forming the backbone, with a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and 15% Syrah fermented in concrete and matured for 12 months in a mix of foudre and demi-muid. The 2019 vintage produced conditions that multiple critics described as the finest in a generation for Châteauneuf, and Janasse responded with one of the greatest Vieilles Vignes ever made. Wine Advocate awarded 98+, Wine Enthusiast 98, Jeb Dunnuck 97+, Decanter 97, Wine Spectator 95, Vinous 93, James Suckling 92. Jeb Dunnuck called it another tour de force, clearly firing on all cylinders. Wine Advocate described black cherries, blackberries, and garrigue, dense and concentrated with formidable yet ripe tannins and vibrant, intense fruit with all the ingredients for cellaring up to two decades. Incredibly priced for a wine drawing scores like these. Very limited. Don’t hesitate.
