This wine has been made exactly three times in its history. The inaugural vintage was 2007, the second was 2016, and the 2019 is the third, produced only because the season delivered raw material so extraordinary that Christophe Sabon felt it demanded its own bottle. A blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah drawn from the most exceptional old-vine parcels on the estate, including vines planted in 1905, the XXL is not simply a richer version of the Vieilles Vignes. It is a wine of its own singular character: dark, muscular, and concentrated, with the warmth and sauvage depth of Châteauneuf from an exceptional vintage held in the most extreme balance the vintage allows. Jeb Dunnuck called it pure magic, saying it “ranks with the all-time greats.” Vinous awarded 95. With fewer than three vintages in existence, the word “rare” does not begin to cover it. The price here is exceptional for a wine this historically significant. These exist in very small numbers. Grab them while they last.
