Château d'Yquem dates back to the middle ages, and the King of England, Richard I, once owned the estate in the late 12th century. He praised the high quality of its wines, which were already then famous, before the estate passed hands of ownership several times until the 18th century, when the Lur-Saluces family purchased it. They ran the Château for more than 200 years, further enhancing the property’s reputation for some of the finest sweet wines in the world. Since 1999, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, a luxury goods conglomerate, has run the Château, which covers 125 hectares of some of the most exquisite terroir in Sauternes, growing a mix of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The soils are famous for their unique blue clay qualities (also known as “mystique clay”), which helps regulate moisture levels in the vineyard to pristinely develop botrytis’ noble rot – the fungus that contributes to the famous flavor profile of Château d'Yquem’s portfolio of luxury sweet wines.

The 2008 comes from a cool season that cranked up the acidity, and it practically hums. Vibrant, laser-focused, and zinging with lemon curd, white peach, and a crisp mineral snap. Serious concentration, seriously smart price. Widely considered the sleeper value of Yquem's 2000s run.

The history of Château d’Yquem is like a novel, an epic saga full of events and colourful personalities spanning more than four centuries. Château d’Yquem is not only the most famous chateau in Sauternes today, the estate has possessed an exalted reputation dating back to the middle ages when d’Yquem was owned by the King of England. Today the estate is owned by the infamous luxury brand Moet Hennessy-Louis Vuitton who have made significant re-investment into the property. Yquem is in a class of their own, quite literally, in the classification of 1855, it was given a unique classification of Premier Cru Superieur", because it so clearly stood above all other Château.
