You know those wines that just make you say, “Oh, hell yeah”...? For me, it’s less about varietal or style – it’s not even about the vintage or producer as a standalone. It’s everything, the whole package. It’s the wine itself: the quality of it, its origins, the texture, the aromas, the flavors… but it’s also the environment in which you drink it. The first time I enjoyed a Meteor Cabernet was one of those “Oh, hell yeah” moments – splitting it with some of my favorite people in the world, and savoring every unbelievable drop with an absolutely delicious meal.
Trying this incredible flagship, 2005 vintage Family Reserve brings me right back to that moment, and reminds me just how much wine can play a part in nostalgia and memory-making. With two 92+ scores from its younger days (which would easily be 96+ nowadays, IYKYK), this is an exceptionally pure, rich, and powerful Coombsville Cabernet with a supple, fruity youthfulness that draws you in over and over again, even at 20 years young. It’s no wonder, coming from the good people at Meteor Vineyards, who have been crafting two exquisite estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons since 2003 – with their first official public release being in 2005, making this bottling a true piece of Napa history.
Normally this retails for $350, but you can have it for UNDER $132 a bottle when you order 2 or more, with shipping included… Oh, hell yeah.
My notes: Such a smooth, round, velvety, and brooding Cabernet – with notes of black currant, blackberry preserves, and dried cherry, plus these sexy notes of cedarwood, sweet cigar box, new leather, dried herbs, pencil lead, dark chocolate, and crunchy gravel. These tannins are whispery soft, with a finish that seemingly never ends and well-integrated acid.
