Coming from the charming and hilly landscape of northern Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, this insanely good 91-point Pinot Noir offers bright red fruits, stony minerality, and acidity as fresh as the environment from which it originates. $15 on three or more? Straight up thievery, in the best possible way!
Perched high on the slopes overlooking the Tamar River, Tamar Ridge winery was founded in the mid-’90s with its first ever release in 1999. After decades of honing and refining their craft, today the estate is strongly dedicated to developing elegant Pinot Noir and embracing a philosophy that marries “50% art” with “50% science.”
The 2019 Estate Pinot Noir epitomizes what the winery does best: cool-climate Pinot cultivated with care to highlight the best of the variety from their clay-loam and quartz soils. It captures the heart of Tasmanian wine, with remarkable freshness, elegant restraint, and impeccable structural balance. The relatively slow ripening conditions in the Tamar Valley help preserve acidity and clarity, while allowing the fruit to develop stunning complexity.
On the nose, it delivers ripe, forward fruits – think red cherries and strawberries – with hints of earthiness, subtle touches of plum, and a hint of forest floor complexity. In the mouth, it’s medium-bodied yet generous, offering a round and mouth-filling texture along with notes of raspberries, strawberries, and cherries framed by supple, silky tannins and balanced acidity. The finish lingers gently, with a soft mineral-earth undertone and long, graceful persistence that offers incredible depth. For the price and value here, go ahead and stock your cellar for the next few months at least!
PAIRING IDEAS: I love, love, love a bright and energetic Pinot Noir like this with some barbecue, and this one will be killer with pulled pork sliders topped with zingy pickles, some creamy, crunchy slaw, and a dollop of spicy Texas barbecue sauce.
