Zweigelt – Austria’s most-planted red grape, the ultimate “picnic red,” and a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent grapes (similar to Pinot Noir), resulting in a bright, fruity, and tart flavor profile that is simply divine! Mid to high acidity and low tannins make this an epic food wine, sure to spice up just about any simple meal on your plate, from pasta salad to turkey sandwiches to spicy white chicken chili. Don’t sleep on this incredible and rare (here in the States, at least) style...in fact, get at least 4 bottles for complimentary shipping!
Together with her husband, Hannes, Simone Hiller-Jordan forms the duo that has led the traditional family winery Jordan (started in 1858) into the next generation since 2010. (For trademark reasons, the wine is sold here in the USA as “Hiller”.) From 2007 on, Simone was still the regional wine queen of Lower Austria, and a year later even the wine queen of all of Austria. She then completed her oenology studies and has been causing a stir in the Weinviertel ever since. Simone is responsible for winemaking, along with her parents Karl and Anni Jordan, and a passion, love, and avid fascination for creating regionally expressive wines are top priority. It is no longer uncommon for a woman to run her own wine estate in what was once regarded as a male-dominated branch, and we could toast to THAT all day!
The color! That’s what hits you first. The wine is ruby red but also shows garnet-red and purple reflections with a slight lightening towards the edge. The aromatics are intense – a wide range, from sour cherries, raspberries, and blackberries to blood orange zest, licorice, and dark roasted coffee aromas. On the palate, this Zweigelt is juicy and full of dark fruit, melting tannins, and notes of mocha and chocolate, as well as a distinctive but excellently integrated wood spice on the finish. If you’ve never experienced Austrian reds, we must strongly urge you to try THIS one. We love the Hiller wines, and are one of the few places on earth to get them! While it lasts!
PAIRING IDEAS: Go with a tangy grilled BBQ chicken to amp up the zesty and bright notes in this flirtatious and cool Zweigelt!
