You might know Piemonte for Barolo and Barbaresco – but there’s another DOCG here that crafts exquisite 100% Nebbiolo red wines. Gattinara DOCG is in Northern Piemonte and offers high-acid, mineral-driven, incredibly aromatic red wines grown among iron-rich volcanic soils. Nervi-Conterno happens to be the oldest winery in Gattinara – founded in 1906 by Luigi Nervi and today under the ownership of Barolo legend Roberto Conterno. This 2020 MAGNUM combines traditional, long-aged Nebbiolo methods with modern precision for an elegant and highly cellarable wine.

Just take a peek at Vinous’s 94-point review (written in 2023, by the way, so mention of “a few years to soften” is certainly lapsed):

“The 2020 Gattinara is elegant and lifted. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon and orange peel grace this ethereal, nuanced Gattinara. Bright saline notes and sweet red-toned fruit build into the long, persistent finish. Understated and silky, the 2020 is exquisite. All this needs is a few years to soften.” – Antonio Galloni for Vinous, 94 Points

Oh, yum! He also calls this the “most approachable” of Nervi’s three wines in the same range, although all three of the wines age for three years in barrel (the minimum requirement for the DOCG is 24 months in oak, 35 months total). This 2020 Gattinara is poised to cellar immaculately for a couple of decades (at least) – but it would also be an ultimate party showstopper in the near future. Give your Italian wine-loving friends a little surprise by busting this out at your next gathering, and collect endless cool points for pouring up Barolo and Barbaresco’s super-chic and underrated cousin from a historic and iconic producer.

About The Producer

Nervi Conterno is one of the historic names of Barolo and Barbaresco, founded in 1890 by Giuseppe Conterno and later stewarded through generations of the family, with Edoardo Conterno playing a major role in the early 20th-century rise of the estate. The winery is known for rigorous vineyard selection, traditional methods, and a style that combines power with finesse, particularly in its Barolo and Barbaresco bottlings that have long been benchmarks for Nebbiolo from Piedmont. Today Nervi Conterno remains family-owned and meticulously focused on quality, producing age-worthy wines that uphold the region’s heritage while appealing to modern collectors and sommeliers who prize classic Piedmontese expression.
