”A Saint-Estèphe of stature and vertical intensity, the 2021 Calon Ségur dazzles from the very first taste. Spice, menthol, licorice, black cherry, mint and espresso are some of the many notes that build with a bit of coaxing. The 2021 clocks in at a modest 12.9% in alcohol, yet it possesses tremendous density and textural resonance. What a wine! Tasted two times.”

Dark garnet in color, tobacco leaf, spicy currants, dried flowers, and blackberries are found on the nose. Medium-bodied, fresh, vibrant and lifted, the fruit is on the elegant, classic side with good sweetness and should be relatively precocious. The finish delivers a nice, spicy, minty, uplifted endnote. The wine was produced from 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, 12.9% ABV, 3.65 pH. The harvest took place September 28, finishing October 13. Drink from 2025-2047.

”One of the true gems in the vintage is the 2021 Château Calon Ségur, which comes from tiny yields of 26 hectoliters per hectare and 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. This beauty was aged in 100% new barrels for 20 months and hit 13% alcohol. It brings more depth, sweet fruit, and charm than most in the vintage and has a complex, layered style in its cassis, black raspberries, tobacco, leather, and savory flower-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, this balanced, layered, complete 2021 has ripe tannins, the vintage’s focused, elegant style, solid mid-palate depth, and a beautiful finish. It already offers pleasure, but it warrants 4-5 years of bottle age and will provide two decades of prime drinking. This vintage doesn't get much better, and this is worth your time and money.”

The 2021 Calon Segur has a deep garnet-purple color. It starts off a bit broody with notes of cedar chest, wild sage, and damp soil, leading to a core of menthol, stewed blackcurrants, and prunes, with a touch of balsamic. The medium-bodied palate is soft and spicy, delivering a good core of berry preserves flavors with exotic spices accents, finishing on a stewed tea note.

Few Bordeaux estates carry the pedigree of Château Calon Ségur. Classified as a Third Growth in the historic 1855 Classification, it ranks among the oldest estates in Saint-Estèphe, with history stretching back to the Gallo-Roman era. The property's iconic heart emblem traces to the Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Lafite and Latour, yet famously declared that his heart belonged to Calon – a devotion the estate has honored on every label since. Today, a small team tends a walled vineyard planted on a distinctive mix of clay and gravel that retains water and lends the fruit its signature freshness, a terroir that helps explain why Calon Ségur consistently delivers finesse where many Saint-Estèphes lean rustic.

That estate character comes through vividly in the 2021, a serious, Cabernet-driven wine from a cool and precise vintage. The blend is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, drawn from notably low yields and aged 20 months in 100% new oak. The result opens with a cool, composed nose of crushed black currant and dark cherry framed by violet, cedar shavings, and a whiff of graphite and dried tobacco leaf. On the palate, it is beautifully drawn, its fine-grained tannins giving the wine an upright, chiseled architecture. Layers of cassis and black plum unfold over savory notes of espresso, iron, and forest floor, all lifted by a bright mineral seam that keeps the whole thing taut and precise, before a long, gently gripping finish that closes on graphite and dark spice. Critics across the board adored it and scored it accordingly – and while it's approachable now with a little air, this is a wine designed to last a good, long while in your cellar.

It’s not often you find a Third Grown of this stature for under $90, and we only have a couple cases on hand. Do what you can to snag at least a couple of these gems!

About The Producer

The estate is one of the oldest in the Médoc. It prides itself on having had among its successive owners since the 12th century, Nicolas-Alexandre Marquis de Ségur, whom Louis XV nicknamed the Prince of Vines and who bequeathed much more to the estate than just his name. He placed it forever in that small circle of wine estates that are inseparable from their appellation. Such heritage demands respect. And it was with the greatest respect for the place, and much humility and even some apprehension, that we undertook in 2013, a few months after acquiring the property, and in association with the Videlot group, investments that would enhance the superb potential of the property. These works, and the manner in which it was carried out, ensured that Calon Ségur’s image of discretion and its wonderfully rich history would be treated with the greatest care. At Calon Ségur, as at all outstanding estates, the notions of domaine and wine are inextricably linked. Both of them, and together, express one and the same terroir; one and the same authenticity. Here too, we were careful to call on exponents of the art of winegrowing that would enhance the development of the vineyard and allow it to express its identity fully.
