The first time I went to Santa Cruz, my husband, dog, and I had a free long weekend and wanted to adventure to a new-to-us area. We drove south a few hours and wound up finding a pretty affordable hotel steps from the beach, quickly falling in love with the easygoing energy and gorgeous views of Santa Cruz (pretty awesome breakfast burritos, too). Over a few days, we ended up enjoying our fair share of Santa Cruz Mountain Cab and kept remarking we wished we could stay way longer.

This Mount Eden Vineyards beauty brings me right back to that unexpected getaway, and the wines we fell head over heels for, with all its depth and concentration, savory qualities, crunchy blue and black fruits, and gravelly edges. The fact that it’s a magnum makes it all the better in my book – the perfect bottle to split when you have company visiting, or to grab a few for your next dinner party. It’s got an incredible 94 points and fully stands up to its reputation coming from one of California's OG boutique wineries (and a favorite here at First Bottle HQ – so you can imagine people were pretty stoked when I got to open this on a Tuesday afternoon).

My notes: This is all Old World charm, with spiced notes of black pepper and star anise layered with grilled meats, olive tapenade, blackberry jam, black plums, smoky incense, and charred cedarwood. Spicy and sultry, yet smooth and seductive… the tannins are whispery soft and the finish lingers for a solid minute at least.

You can’t beat under $91 for 2+ bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon magnums of this caliber! Grab a couple for all your near and far occasions alike!
