95 point Premier Cru White Burgundy from the oldest winery in Burgundy! Suckling likens it to the best White Burgundies he had in the ‘80s and ‘90s... “The aromatic subtlety, the textural finesse plus the underplayed power are all beautiful.” For our great price, this is an absolute treasure!
Maison Champy is considered the oldest winery in Burgundy, established in Beaune in 1720 and known as a favorite wine of Gustave Eiffel (the man behind the Eiffel Tower) in the late 1800s. As a result, he helped design the winery, fermentation cellar, and wine cellar, which were built in 1890 in the Eiffel style. Its notability has only grown in the time since, becoming certified organic in 2005 and joining the Renown Historical Monuments Trust in 2010. Maison Champy was even an integral part of the invention of pasteurization, as Louis Pasteur chose to study and experiment with these wines he greatly respected to eliminate the bitterness caused by phylloxera in the 1800s. Pasteurization is no longer used in winemaking today, as other methods have proved even more successful, but it no doubt changed the course of food safety around the world.
The prestige and history of this house are deeply rooted, and the wines only carry it further. Maison Champy owns 21 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune, mostly within Pernand-Vergelesses, all tended to organically to preserve the true essence of the outstanding terroir. This wine hails from the Premier Cru vineyard of En Caradeaux, which means “at the corner of two,” likely referring to its corner positioning of the vineyard covering the hilly slopes of Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-lès-Beaune, and located directly across the valley from the Corton Grand Cru hill. 2022 was an incredible year for Burgundy, getting 96 points from Vinous, who said, “The 2022 Burgundy vintage offers a bounty for those with a passion for its wines.”
In his 95-point score, James Suckling says, “This reminds me of the best white burgundies I tasted back in the 1980s and early 1990s.” With numerous changes in production, technology, and the environment over the past several decades, this statement is a massive compliment to the devout craftsmanship here! Opening with fresh orange and grapefruit notes, the wine is supple and well-balanced with apple blossoms, summer peaches, chalk, and a minty, mineral essence that carries through the lengthy finish. Myriad spices like cardamom, lemongrass, and chervil just add on and on to the nuanced finish. I’m, in a word, obsessed. If you love White Burgundy, or any great Chardonnay, for that matter... do not miss this!
