Since 1797, Maison Louis Latour has been growing grapes in Burgundy, slowly growing their holdings to reach over 50 hectares. In 1985, the grower began producing its own wines, quickly becoming renowned for their meticulous production practices, reverence for tradition, and commitment to quality. Domaine Louis Latour is the same production, yet utilizing fruit purchased from select parcels throughout Burgundy. These are some of the most rare, highly esteemed, brilliantly crafted Burgundian wines you can find, and we’re ecstatic to have even a small allotment for almost 40% off the retail price. These opportunities don’t come around often, and real Burghounds know this is a chance to snag something truly superior and collectible!
“Clos du Roi” translates to “King’s Enclosure” – a nod to the fact that this vineyard was once owned by the kings of France. A Grand Cru since 1937 in the village of Aloxe-Corton, it has a perfect eastern-facing exposure on Corton’s main hill. Tended to in the traditional method, the vines are hand pruned and picked at a later date, giving the wine an exemplary richness and fullness of flavor. The vines grow on predominantly marl and limestone soil, with an average age of 30 years old. The grapes ferment traditionally, in open vats, followed by 10 to 12 months age time in medium-toasted 25% new French oak barrels, made in-house by the Louis Latour cooperage. Everything here is intentional, and everything is done with a nod to history, tradition, and authenticity.
As such, the wine is one of the most pure expressions of Red Burgundy you can get your hands on at this time! 2016 was a trying year for grape growers, though it ultimately yielded exceptional-quality grapes, the likes of which have crafted some undeniably stunning (and high-dollar) wines. Aromas of bursting morello cherry, baked plums, raspberry, and wild herbs waft from the glass in tandem with pine wood and damp forest floor. The mouth brings in more deep, dark berry sensations alongside notes of wild mushrooms and violets with additional accents of woodsy, spicy sensations. Velvety tannins wrap up the smooth and sultry finish with one final generous curtsy. You’d be hard-pressed to find this caliber of Red Burgundy from such an epic year and a storied producer for nearly 40% off anywhere else! Alas, only 10 cases await, and likely not for long – just make sure you get your 3-pack to unlock free shipping!
PAIRING IDEAS: Melt-in-your-mouth tender duck confit with crispy, herby roasted fingerling potatoes, plus a little gem salad topped with finely shredded Mimolette cheese and truffle vinaigrette, is...the only way to go. Trust.
