It’s no secret that Château Latour is a legendary estate, and has been for centuries. The wines here are as consistently amazing, timeless, and perfect as any wine, anywhere, for all time. Today we have their second wine, Les Forts De Latour, which is crafted with all the same care as the Grand Vin. The main difference is the location from which the grapes are sourced, the proportion of new barrels used in maturation (50-60%, compared to the Grand Vin’s 100%), as well as the usage of a higher amount of Merlot.

The results are, of course, wondrous – and the price is even more captivating. While the Grand Vin can reach high into the hundreds – sometimes even thousands – of dollars range, you can get this impeccable 97-point wine for under $200! It comes from parcels slightly farther away from the Gironde estuary and is a blend of 65.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31.9% Merlot, and 2.3% Petit Verdot. This is as collectible as any Grand Vin, and absolutely goes down as one of the finest “second” wines in all of Bordeaux, with ample layers of rich, ripe, dark berries alongside milk chocolate, cedar spice, slate, fennel, some citrus zest, and a stellar minerality of crushed gravel with a bright, herbal edge. The tannins are chalky and smooth, the finish is eternal, and the value is out of this world.

About The Producer

Located in the lush commune of Pauillac in Bordeaux, Château Latour is a beacon of winemaking fame. Boasting a prestigious First Growth rating from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, this vineyard is a hot ticket item for wine lovers everywhere. With its focus on Cabernet Sauvignon, this winery produces robust and long-lasting wines that are a force to be reckoned with. Nestled in the southeast corner of Pauillac and bordering Saint-Julien, Château Latour is a true gem of the Médoc region. Its vineyard boasts an impressive 80% of Cabernet Sauvignon, with the remaining grapes being Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The grand vin is only made from the choicest plots surrounding the chateau, as depicted on the 1759 plan of the domaine. For those looking for a taste of Latour's signature style, but at a more accessible price point, the winery also offers Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour – both made from the vineyard's younger vines.
