Acumen is one of those spots that leaves you wondering just how they do it. With vineyard land way, way up in the no-man’s-land section of Atlas Peak, planted and farmed by iconic vineyard guru, Michael Wolf (Harlan Estate and more), and brought lovingly to bottle the winemaking prowess of living legend, Phillip Corallo-Titus… it is simply baffling to be able to score these artisan Cabernet Sauvignons at such a spectacular price!
Forbes called Acumen “a shining new star,” and the winery produces an excellent range of wines – but we must say, their PEAK Cabernet absolutely tops the list. Chappellet’s long-time winemaker, Phillip Corallo-Titus (and frequent 100-point club recipient), selects the very best blocks and barrel lots from the Attelas and Edcora Vineyards on the Atlas Peak estate to craft this PEAK Napa Cab. With 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot, aged in 75% new French oak – it's an absolute doozy! If you love gargantuan, mountainside Cabernet, man, this is it.
It’s just massive, dark, concentrated, and not for the shy, with bakers chocolate, wild blackberry puree, kirsch, plums, and blueberries, with a minerally, crushed rock note and exotic, toasty Asian spices like star anise, plenty of graphite, and this sweet, luscious vanilla bean kiss on the velvety finish. It drinks magnificently today, and is certain to last at least through the next couple of decades! This is more booming than any fireworks display, and the quality for value of such a prestigious wine is off-the-charts! A little Independence Day wine shopping? Twist my arm – I’m loading up, too!
PAIRING IDEAS: Grill up some beef bratwursts, with some grilled onion and bell peppers on the side – and shove it all into a brioche bun with spicy, seedy mustard. A match made in heaven!
