Lou Kapcsándy, a Hungarian refugee turned petroleum engineer, purchased the 20-acre State Lane Vineyard in Yountville in 2000 from Beringer, replanted it entirely after a phylloxera outbreak, and produced his first vintage in 2004, building one of Napa's great cult estates in remarkably short order. In the glass, the wine shows cassis, chocolate, burning embers, espresso, and forest floor on the nose, with sweet tannins, full-bodied power, and freshness that Parker said would keep for 25 to 30 years.
