Claudio Tipa of ColleMassari acquired the estate in 2002, bringing in current winemaker Luca Marrone, who has preserved the estate's distinctive identity without altering its character: a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 15% Sangiovese, the latter making Grattamacco unique among Bolgheri estates and giving the wine a distinctive Mediterranean freshness that sets it apart from its peers. The vineyards sit at between 100 and 200 meters above sea level on one of Bolgheri's only two hills, with a panoramic view of the Tuscan coast. The 2019 is the estate's own description: a vintage of great character and richness, where remarkable structure is beautifully balanced by acid freshness and tannic balance, with extreme persistence and verticality as a prelude to marked longevity.
