Kapcsandy Family Winery Merlot Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard Yountville Napa Valley 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

99 Jeb Dunnuck -
Another wine that flirts with perfection is the 100% Merlot 2016 Roberta's Reserve, which was harvested at the end of September and spent 20 months in 70% new barrels. I finished my note on this wine with Best Merlot in the New World, and I can't think of another wine that comes close to the layered, balanced, majestic style of this beauty. Offering up a kaleidoscope of black cherries, damp earth, chocolate, cedarwood, and spring flowers, it's full-bodied and rich, yet just glides over the palate with a seamless, elegant, pure style that needs to be tasted to be believed. As with all the Kapcsandy wines, it has the purity and balance to offer pleasure in its youth yet is going to evolve beautifully.

About the Producer

Lou Kapcsandy (pronounced "Cup-chon-dy") came to the US from his native Hungary in 1956, pursuing a successful career in chemical engineering and manufacturing. Through collleagues in the wine industry, the wine bug grew. In 1998, Lou and his wife, Bobbie, visited Leoville-Las-Cases and they were smitten by the idea of opening up their own winery back in the states. The Kapcsandys purchased the historic Beringer Estate State Lane vineyard (which was home to that company's Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon program). They have since then replanted the vineyards primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot and a new winery was built in 2005. They have a family mentality of producing consistent "First Growth" quality wines that rival the best wine regions of the world.
